The SVG Fire Service came in for a tongue lashing from a number of residents in the Cane Garden community, this relating to a fire which occurred on Monday night in which the owners of L G sales suffered a loss of stock and damage to property.
After much trips to ascertain water for the two fire trucks that came on the scene at around 6 pm, assistance in containing the blaze came around 12 am on Tuesday morning from one of the fire tenders stationed at the Argyle Airport.
Police Commissioner Colin John said there were still some sparks being dealt with by fire officers when he left the scene at 3 am Tuesday morning.
The blaze was discovered at 5.30pm on Monday 3rd September 2018.
“Fire is very unpredictable, I am in no way formally trained in fire, but we have seen in developing countries where fire gets out of control, it is something that you have to be always thinking about ways in which you can extinguish the blaze”.
John said the police are always limited in terms of resources, and we are doing the best with what we have to make sure that persons are safe not just in the case of fire, but generally in policing.
Residents spoke about the need for more fire hydrants as the firemen seemed oblivious as to where they were.
The Police Commissioner spoke to that issue also.
“ The fire department from time to time conduct drills and knowing the location of these hydrants are part of that training, as to the placing of new fire hydrants we would make recommendations to the CWSA and they would place the hydrants in areas recommended by the Fire Department”.
As pertaining to fire tenders and how they access narrow roads the C.O.P had this to say.
“In terms of building houses and the road infrastructure that has to do with planning but we can hold consultations with them for future planning, as we are always looking ways to improve serving the public”.
John said the fire department received training earlier this year through the assistance of their Canadian counterparts.
The commissioner homeowners in the area for their assistance on Monday night.
