Roosevelt Skerrit, the political leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP), was sworn in as Prime Minister of Dominica after his party won the December 6, 2022, General Election.
In congratulating Skerrit, President Charles Savarin stated that he believes he will be the only prime minister in Caribbean history to have served six consecutive terms as prime minister and led his party to five consecutive general election victories.
President Savarin notes in his speech that there was no repeat of the regrettable incidents that occurred in the run-up to the 2019 election, nor was there any violence on election day itself. The President congratulated all stakeholders and the Dominican people on the peaceful conduct of the elections and their right to vote for the candidates of their choice.
The Dominican President acknowledges that the issue of electoral reform remains unresolved and looks forward to Sir Dennis Byron’s report on the subject.
He also welcomes the Prime Minister’s assurance, following the results of the elections last night, that he would ensure that all stakeholders, including the Commonwealth Secretariat and the OAS, would be involved in consultations to review the report and recommendations from Sir Dennis, and that once an acceptable draught legislation on this matter is agreed upon, a bill will be brought before parliament for consideration.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Skerrit stated after taking the oath of office that the DLP was rewarded with a resounding victory in the December 6 elections, which he is confident will be deemed credible, free, and fair, reflecting the will of the Dominican people.
