As hurricane season approaches, the Ministry of Agriculture is calling on livestock farmers to take immediate action to protect their animals and, by extension, their livelihoods. Sheniko, representing the Animal Health and Production Services, emphasized that because many families depend on these animals for food and income, ensuring their safety is a critical responsibility.
Farmers are encouraged to inspect and reinforce their existing structures to withstand high winds. Key recommendations include properly anchoring posts into the ground and securing rafters with bolts, nuts, and nails to increase structural integrity.
“We went through a hurricane and we haven’t had any damage,” Sheniko noted regarding a prepared farm, proving that proactive preparation truly works. Additionally, all damaged gates and fences should be repaired immediately to prevent animals from wandering off during a storm.
A major concern during severe weather is the loss of livestock due to flooding or escaping. Farmers are urged to move animals away from low-lying areas or pastures near rivers that are prone to flooding.
To ensure animals can be returned if they do escape, proper identification is essential. For those who do not use traditional tags, the Ministry suggests keeping detailed records and taking clear photographs of each animal. Without these identifiers, an escaped animal may be claimed by someone else, leading to a total loss for the farmer.
Ensuring a steady supply of clean food and water is another pillar of the Ministry’s advice. Farmers must stockpile enough feed to last throughout the season. To prevent spoilage, feed should be stored in secure, sturdy containers—referred to by Sheniko as “bullets”—that are capable of keeping out rain and preventing contamination.
By putting their “best foot forward” now, farmers can mitigate the risks posed by the hurricane season and ensure their livestock remains a dependable source of food and security.
