- Princess Juliana airport achieves milestone, Embracing Cutting-Edge Technology
On Friday, January 12, 2024, the Princess Juliana International Airport Operating Company N.V. (PJIAE) marked a significant milestone in the creation of the new terminal. Since the beginning of the airport’s restoration in 2021, the project has made substantial progress, and Friday was an excellent day to celebrate with stakeholders.
The new departure hall is now ready to welcome all travellers, and the new check-in area will be phased in by the end of January 2024.
The freshly opened departure hall is a key milestone in PJIAE’s continued commitment to providing the greatest services and amenities to its passengers. It is the first part of a major refurbishment that will bring a fresh and dynamic atmosphere, improving the entire passenger experience in the terminal building.
Travellers will have access to a limited selection of retail and food options, with several more due to open in the coming months, all carefully chosen to improve the airport experience for all passengers.
The departure hall is built to accommodate future passenger expansion. The new hall, which is over 10,000 square metres, is outfitted with cutting-edge technology and can handle 2.5 million passengers. It is a cutting-edge terminal where passengers are screened and emigrated using the most recent technological advances.
By the end of January 2024, the new check-in area will be phased in. The check-in facility is designed to give travellers the greatest possible check-in experience, including the option to check in big luggage.
The innovative hybrid self-bag drops are also outfitted with counters and can be controlled by airline personnel if needed. This increases the airport’s flexibility to handle future demand.
Brian Mingo, CEO of PJIAE, expressed gratitude for this achievement: ‘We are extremely happy and thankful to all of our colleagues and partners who made it possible! On behalf of the Managing Board, I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone. PJIAE is happy to welcome more customers to the renovated and improved departure hall, which offers cutting-edge facilities and a better travel experience.
Silveria Jacobs, Sint Maarten’s Prime Minister, stated in her speech: “It is through resilience, dedication, and hard work that we have achieved remarkable results for this airport and our nation.
” Together with all stakeholders, we have overcome hurdles to improve this airport. Today embodies the spirit of our resilient nation, which strives for greatness. As we commemorate our accomplishments today, let us continue to move ahead, motivated by the conviction that, with determination, there are no limitations to what we can do together for our dear country. I’d want to thank everyone at Saint Martins, big and small, who helped with this project”.
