St Vincent Argyle Airport to Expand
Design work on the expansion and upgrades to the Argyle International is near completion.
Minister of Finance Hon. Camillo Gonsalves says because Argyle International has exceeded expectations in such a short period of time, there must be changes made to the existing terminal building to accommodate more passengers, as the demand is greater.
Speaking on radio on Monday, the Minister explained that at peak periods in the week, the terminal building reaches its capacity and with the coming on stream of other international airlines like Delta Airlines, provisions must be made for the increased demands.
“We have engaged with a design team from the UK and they are looking at the footprint of the terminal building to see what can be done quickly so that we are not building for a whole year but what we can erect quickly to increase the space in the arrival hall, to increase the space with conveyor belts and to reimagine the departure hall,” Minister Gonsalves explained.
The structural and design works that will be done are expected to commence within the next 3/4 months once the designs are approved, and according to the minister, these structures are to be erected quickly.
“The structures, they are designing are erected very quickly, almost pre-fab… and added into the very front of the hall on the tarmac side, to occupy some space in the back and also some space adjacent to where the domestic arrivals are… So the designers are looking at those areas; they are doing the designs to submit to us; we haven’t approved the designs yet,” the Minister said.
The Argyle International Airport was opened on February 14, 2017.
