The dangers of derelict vehicles in SVG
Vehicles are important in our daily lives. They help to boost the economy by ensuring that the working class and school children arrive at their destination on time. Vehicles also play a pivotal role by ensuring that goods are delivered to various businesses which creates employment and keeps the economy afloat.
There is an old saying that nothing lasts forever. Due to “wear and tear” all vehicles will reach the end of their lifespan and will not be able to work. In some communities across St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the presence of derelict vehicles can be seen at the side of the road and on vacant lands.
For example, the road to the Diamond landfill, some derelict vehicles are present along the side of the road. Derelict vehicles can be a habitat for rats, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and flies. Derelict vehicles spoil the aesthetic beauty of communities. It is very unsightly seeing a lot of derelict vehicles in the environment.
Derelict vehicles can cause physical injuries to children playing in them. They are filled with broken glass, and sharp metal edges. These vehicles can also leak gasoline and oil which can be a fire hazard.
I remember couple of years ago, Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA) was removing derelict vehicles from the environment. I would strongly recommend that Central Water and Sewerage Authority reintroduce this programme of removing derelict vehicles from various communities.
This will help to keep the environment cleaner and healthier and it would give each community a good facelift. When these vehicles are removed from the environment, trees can be planted to beautify the various communities.
