Following the historic qualification of the national netball team, the Vincy Jewels, for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has pledged comprehensive state backing, structured employment initiatives, and a new long-term sports development framework.
Speaking at a welcome ceremony for the team returning from the Americas Netball World Cup qualifiers in Barbados, sports officials outlined government commitments, ongoing policy shifts, and a new strategic roadmap designed to support national athletes across all disciplines.
Minister of Sports, Kaschaka Cupid, affirmed that the government will provide financial and operational backing for the team’s upcoming World Cup campaign in Sydney, marking the country’s first netball World Cup appearance in 24 years.
Emphasizing that sports is prioritized as a key pillar of national development, Minister Cupid announced discussions to establish gainful, tailored employment for national athletes. The initiative aims to provide professional security that accommodates athletic careers, addressing past challenges where athletes took jobs in sectors like the police force that did not align with their professional aspirations.
In addition to long-term career support, government officials and team management highlighted immediate commitments to athlete care, including:
Provision of necessary medical diagnostic services, such as MRIs and X-rays, for injured squad members.
Dedicated access to fitness and gym training facilities.
Coordination of structured transportation for players following late-night training sessions.
To transition national sports from short-term tournament preparation to institutional sustainability, Coordinator of Sports and Physical Activities Roxel John submitted a 45-page strategic proposal to government ministers.
The policy roadmap proposes the creation of a specialized development entity aimed at elevating national athletes across all disciplines. Key structural features of the proposal include:
Biomechanics and Sports Science: The establishment of a biomechanics laboratory to introduce diagnostic science, physical tracking, and elite performance analysis to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Institutional Structures: Long-term framework building, athlete value development, and inter-ministerial collaboration between sports, education, and tourism.
Resource Synergy: Combined administrative and financial structures to streamline athlete preparation for international multi-year cycles.
While reaffirming state support, Minister Cupid and Vincy Jewels Team Manager Jovanni Roberts issued an appeal to the private sector (“Corporate SVG”) to partner with the state. Officials noted that expanding corporate sponsorships will be vital to funding squad logistics, equipment, and international training tours required for Sydney 2027, while leaving a lasting impact on women’s sports development across the nation.
