L-R: Friday - Cummings

Minister of Health Daniel Cummings believes the current healthcare infrastructure in St Vincent is adequately supported.

While Minister Cummings noted that St. Vincent and the Grenadines is “very well served” with district clinics and poly clinics, he described the broader hospital infrastructure as being in a “unique” and “strange” position compared to other OECS nations.

He highlighted that the country currently maintains six hospitals for a small population, which he argued makes the administrative cost of healthcare “astronomical” and inefficient.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Godwin Friday at a recent press conference explicitly stated that the healthcare system as it currently stands is “woefully inadequate”. He noted that building the new hospital at Arnos Vale is a significant component required to improve services for the population.

The Prime Minister further described the current maternity and pediatrics units as “substandard” and failing to meet necessary requirements.

The Arnos Vale Project: To address these deficiencies, the government is proceeding with a $125 million USD modern hospital project at Arnos Vale. This project represents a “fundamental shift” in strategy, as it will involve the eventual closure of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital as a general hospital and the consolidation of services—including maternity and pediatrics—into a single, more efficient facility.

During a site visit, Cummings and other officials identified challenges with the new project, specifically a shortage of the requisite number of skilled workers needed to maintain the original construction pace.

Cummings feels the network of clinics provides good coverage, both he and the Prime Minister agree that the existing hospital infrastructure is inefficient, substandard in key areas, and requires a complete transformation through the new Arnos Vale facility.
