The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Bureau of Standards commemorated World Standards Day on October 14, 2025, with a groundbreaking recognition ceremony that celebrated the development of the country’s first Broadcasting Code of Practice.
The event brought together media professionals, technical experts, and government representatives to highlight a transformative approach to responsible broadcasting.
Key Highlights of the Broadcasting Code
Executive Director Ezra Ledger outlined the strategic rationale behind the new standards, emphasizing four critical motivations:
- Addressing Increased Media Competition
- Responding to Public Demand for Ethical Content
- Clarifying Broadcaster Responsibilities
- Recognizing Media’s Community Impact
“This code represents more than a document—it’s a commitment to excellence and integrity in our media landscape,” Ledger explained during the ceremony.
Notably, the Broadcasting Code of Practice remains voluntary, embodying a spirit of self-regulation. However, officials have signaled potential future legislation and the establishment of a dedicated broadcasting commission.
The code was meticulously developed by drawing insights from international broadcasting standards, specifically referencing frameworks from Ireland and Trinidad and Tobago.
This approach ensures that St. Vincent’s guidelines are both globally compatible and locally relevant.
