Speaking during his Independence Day address at the Arnos Vale Playing Field on October 27, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday highlighted substantial increases to National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pensions and the return of the seasonal duty-free Christmas barrel program.

To cushion citizens against inflation and the rising cost of living, the government is introducing higher NIS benefit payouts starting January 4, 2027, which will directly benefit 7,375 NIS pensioners.

Under the revised payment scheme:

Contributory Pensions: Adjustments will be calculated based on cumulative inflation since the last pension adjustment in 2014, taking into account the year each recipient retired.

Minimum Pension: Raising by 25%, moving from $80 per week to $100 per week.

Non-Contributory Pension & Elderly Assistance: Increasing from $37.50 per week to $50 per week.

Prime Minister Friday emphasized that these enhanced payouts aim to protect the purchasing power of seniors and vulnerable individuals. He commended the new board and senior management at the NIS for their responsive approach in expanding benefits while preserving the scheme’s overall financial health.

Reassuring households ahead of the holiday season, the Prime Minister confirmed that the traditional duty-free Christmas barrel concessions will remain in place.

The program is scheduled to begin on November 15, 2026, and will run through January 15, 2027. According to PM Friday, keeping the concession program active will allow families across the nation to stretch their holiday budgets further and bring additional cheer during the festive period.
