In a demonstration of diplomatic solidarity, President William Lai welcomed Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Godwin Friday to Taipei yesterday with a full military honors ceremony, including a 21-gun salute. The visit marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, a milestone both leaders pledged to use as a foundation for deeper economic and political cooperation.

President Lai expressed that Taiwan was “deeply moved” by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ steadfast support for its inclusion in international forums.

He highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Friday choosing Taiwan as his first overseas destination since taking office eight months ago, describing the move as a clear signal of the “staunch and robust diplomatic ties” shared by the two countries.

Prime Minister Friday reaffirmed this bond, stating that the two nations have become more than just friends—they are partners in a global landscape that often restricts Taiwan’s ability to contribute fully to international organizations. He pledged his government’s continued advocacy for Taiwan’s participation in the UN, Interpol, and other specialized agencies.

A central theme of the visit is the transition into a “next chapter” of the relationship, specifically through increased Taiwanese investment. Friday identified four pillars for the economic development of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines:

  • Agriculture
  • Tourism
  • The Blue Economy: Including fisheries, marinas, and maritime industries.
  • The New Economy: Focused on information technology, sports, creative industries, and entertainment.

The Prime Minister invited Taiwanese investors to explore every sector, noting that even modest investments could “go a long way to creating more opportunities and providing good jobs” for his people.

The Vincentian delegation’s five-day visit is scheduled to conclude this Saturday. Key upcoming events include an investor roundtable designed to connect the delegation with prospective Taiwanese business partners, as well as celebrations marking the official anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
