The Ministry of Education has officially released a revised set of school fee guidelines following a virtual meeting held on July 14, 2026. The new policy aims to ensure that educational costs remain within the legal framework while supporting the financial needs of schools across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Central to the announcement is the reinforcement of the free tuition policy as dictated by Section 16 of the Education Act No. 34 of 2006. According to the ministry, neither students nor parents are to be charged tuition fees or other costs for attendance at any public or government-assisted school.

However, exceptions are made for students who are not citizens of a CARICOM Member State or a Commonwealth country, as well as for specific items like books and specialized services authorized by the Minister via the Gazette.

The ministry has categorized allowable charges into required and optional items. The required fees are strictly limited to the school badge, the school tie, the Parent-Teacher Association fee, and the physical education uniform or polo shirt. All other items are considered optional, including student photographs, school handbooks, report books, homework books, art supplies, music recorders, and 32 GB flash drives.

Additionally, fees for the school co-operative and the book loan scheme are designated as optional. Notably, the ministry specified that while exercise books are on the optional list, students have the right to choose suitable books other than those supplied by the school.

In light of these revisions, school principals have been directed to update their registration packages immediately to reflect the approved fee structure. For schools that have already completed their registration process, the ministry has mandated that necessary arrangements be made to refund parents for any fees collected that no longer apply under the new guidelines.

The ministry acknowledged the financial difficulties schools face regarding operational expenses and encouraged the pursuit of innovative and sustainable revenue generation within the limits of the law. Further public updates on these decisions are expected to be provided by the Minister of Education in the near future. The ministry expressed gratitude to education stakeholders for their professional engagement and dedication to advancing quality education for the families of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
