Opposition Leader Ralph Gonsalves described the current government’s actions as “waging war on the poor,” specifically contrasting his own past leadership style with the current administration’s policies. He characterized the shift in governance by comparing himself to a “loving Santa Claus” and the current leadership to an “evil Grinch”.
Gonsalves cited several key areas where he believes this “war” is being fought:
- Reductions in Social Assistance: He claimed that while he used to provide 500,000 monthly in assistance for students through the national lottery, the current government is cutting back and restricting access to these funds. He noted that households with a total income of more than 2,000 a month are being told not to apply for assistance at all.
- The “Affordability Crisis”: Gonsalves pointed to a 52% increase in the fuel surcharge for electricity since March 2026 as evidence of an escalating crisis. He argued that this, combined with rising gasoline and diesel prices, is creating a situation where families must choose between basic needs.
- Impact on Education: He provided examples of the “war” affecting students, such as a young woman denied scholarship help for an associate degree and another told to defer her studies for a year after missing a deadline due to her mother’s death. He argued that families with modest incomes of $2,500 may only be able to afford to send one child to school because of the rising costs of transport and utilities.
- Lack of Government Subsidies: Instead of the government providing a direct subsidy for utility costs, Gonsalves claimed they are “bleeding” Vinlec by making the company absorb certain service charges. He warned that this lack of proper maintenance funding leads to power outages that cause poor families to lose food like “chicken wing and turkey wing” to spoilage.
- Economic and Political Hardship: He asserted that “hardship and suffering is across the land” due to political victimization, a lack of job creation, and the rising cost of living.
Gonsalves concluded that despite what he called “smoke and mirrors and camouflage,” the NDP administration is actively waging a war against the most vulnerable citizens.
