UN VOTE: Russia aggressor in Ukraine

On Monday, St Vincent and the Grenadines chose to abstain from voting on a nonbinding resolution that denounces Russia as the aggressor in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The resolution, supported by the EU, although lacking any enforcement mechanisms, was passed with overwhelming support and serves as a global expression of solidarity in response to Russia’s unprovoked aggression towards its neighbour.

Monday commemorated the third anniversary of Russia’s comprehensive incursion into Ukraine.

In April 2022, St. Vincent and the Grenadines joined 57 other nations in abstaining from the vote regarding Russia’s expulsion from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The resolution proposed by the United States to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council garnered 93 votes at the United Nations General Assembly today.

The resolution referenced egregious and systematic violations and abuses of human rights perpetrated by the invading Russian forces in Ukraine.

On Monday, the CARICOM nations of Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Barbados, Guyana, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago cast their votes in favour of the resolution.

Grenada chose to abstain, whereas Haiti cast a vote in opposition to the resolution.
