The Minister of Tourism Honorable Kishore Shallow delivering remarks at the launch of SVG Sailing Week 2026, focused on the strategic importance of sports tourism, the restoration of the event’s prestige, and the economic benefits for the local community.
Shallow described the event as one that “perfectly captures who we are as a nation”—adventurous, welcoming, and world-class. He emphasized the deep historical connection between St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the ocean, noting that the sea has shaped the nation “long before GPS” and “carbon fiber hulls”.
Regarding the future of the event, the Minister highlighted ‘Restoring Greatness’, referencing a mandate from the Prime Minister to return the event to its former glory, promising that within four years, “we are going to be one of the better if not the best sailing events in this part of the world”.
Shallow identified the week as a critical opportunity for sports tourism, which is a high priority for his ministry. The event is designed to create opportunities for local businesses and pathways for young people in marine sports, hospitality, and event management. He noted that last year’s event featured a “magnificent show” by young sailors, suggesting a bright future for the initiative.
In an interview with the API following his speech, Shallow elaborated on his focus on “community-based tourism,” stating that every event should impact Vincentians and expressed a desire to package the unique “Vincy” story to attract tourists, arguing that the combination of the nation’s unique story and beautiful destination is a “perfect formula for success”.
