St Vincent Agriculture Minister Israel Bruce addressed the issue of praedial larceny (the theft of crops and livestock) as a major challenge that undermines farmers’ livelihoods and discourages investment.
Bruce emphasized that the impact of such theft is not just financial but also emotional, citing the example of a farmer in Marriaqua whose loss of months of labor struck a “blow to his dignity and his trust in the system”.
To combat this, Bruce proposed the following technological solutions in collaboration with Taiwan:
• Traceability Systems: He envisioned a system where produce is digitally tagged and traceable from the farm to the market.
• Deterrence and Accountability: By implementing this technology, the government aims to ensure accountability and deter thieves, making it difficult for stolen goods to be sold.
• Smart Agriculture: This initiative aligns with the “young farmer program” mentioned by Ambassador Fiona Hu Chu Fan, which incorporates IoT (Internet of Things) solutions and smart agriculture to empower the next generation.
Bruce stated that the goal of installing this technology is to “stamp out praedial larceny once and for all” and restore hope, confidence, and smiles to the faces of the farmers
