2 Min Read

STEM SVG joined JCI on Saturday 29th September, 2017 at Layou’s District Clinic for their Health Outreach Programme. The theme for this JCI event was: “It’s Your Health Own It”. This worthwhile venture comprised of several different activities such as weight, sugar and pressure checks, pap smears, prostate screening, rapid HIV testing, eye testing and public health awareness.

The Participants of STEM SVG were given an opportunity to interact with, and serve the members of the public, in weight, pressure and sugar testing. STEM SVG participants assisted in escorting persons to the various locations for testing. They also distributed pamphlets about dental care, MASA’s Air Ambulance service and vector control.

Complementing the information, posters of the diverse pests in SVG and how to control them were displayed outside the District Clinic. In addition, the participants of STEM SVG took the opportunity to get their eyes, weight, sugar and pressure checked.

The residents of Layou came out and made full use of the wonderful services offered, leaving with smiles and sharing a bit of local humour to lighten the atmosphere around.

On Friday 4th August 2017, some participants of STEM SVG gained some theoretical knowledge of our Botanical Gardens from Mr Shallow the Curator.

The STEM SVG students found out that a Botanical Garden is a well-maintained habitat for diverse plants that may also be endangered, such as the Soufriere Tree (our national flower).

Students were exposed to learning the plant’s botanical names and places of origin. Moreover, he also stated that other entities that are not necessities can be present in a Botanical Garden (such as tourist attractions) and that practically anyone can create a Botanical Garden.

While elaborating on the theoretical knowledge, Mr Shallow shared the original purposes of the Botanical Gardens, which include:  medicinal, consumerism, industrial and ornamental.
