Health authorities in Suriname have officially confirmed a recent outbreak of the Chikungunya virus after several residents tested positive despite having no recent history of international travel.

This mosquito-borne illness is characterized by debilitating symptoms such as high fever and severe joint pain, prompting the government to ramp up surveillance and contact tracing efforts.

To manage the spread, officials are advising the public to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed and to utilize protective clothing and repellent.

Medical guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health suggest using paracetamol for pain relief while strictly avoiding aspirin or ibuprofen.

This situation marks a significant resurgence of the virus in the region, which first saw a major local outbreak over a decade ago.

Residents are encouraged to seek professional medical attention if their symptoms intensify to ensure proper care and monitoring.
