SVG: Increase In Domestic Violence, Over 400 Males Are Victims

The Ministry of National Mobilisation will launch several media campaigns to enlighten the general public on the scourge of domestic and gender-based violence.

The Ministry says the campaign is necessary as recent data shows an increase in cases in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The administrative officer in the Ministry of National Mobilisation, Philcol Jeffers, said there had been 1399 reported cases of domestic violence from January 2012 to April 2020.

Jeffers stated that there were 2 reported cases in 2010, 2 in 2011, 51 in 2012, 173 in 2013, 144 in 2013, 6 in 2015, 37 in 2016, 371 in 2017, 273 in 2018, 191 in 2019 and 119 in 2020.

According to the data, 324 of the total cases are from the Eastern Division Colonarie to Owia. While 352 are from the South Central division or Biabou to Calliaqua, including Mesopotamia. 41 came from the Central Kingstown district, Kingstown to Questelles, 94 from the South Western division, which includes Vermont to Barrouallie, 74 from the North-Western division or Spring Village to Chateaubelair, and 211 from the Grenadines.

According to recent statistics of domestic and gender-based violence reports, 416 were males, 972 were females, and 8 did not state their gender.

Jeffers said that two hundred and eighteen were juveniles. He of this number, some individuals went on to attain their education.

For primary education, there were 175, 22 for secondary, and 05 persons attained tertiary education.
