The Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) will join with the rest of the world to celebrate World Food Day on Friday, October 16 2020.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Grow, nourish, sustain. Together, our actions are our future.”
This year’s theme highlights the importance of preserving access to safe and nutritious food. This will continue to be an essential part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly, for poor and vulnerable communities that are hit hardest by the pandemic and resulting in economic shocks. In moments like this, it is more important to recognize the need to support our food heroes – farmers and workers – through the food systems.
Here on the local front, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Rural Transformation, Industry and Labour is collaborating with the Ministry of Education to host the World Food Day celebration with Primary and Secondary schools. Selected schools will receive broiler chicks, vegetable seedlings and fruit tree crops as a package to celebrate the theme. An address will be made to these schools by Agricultural Officials. The Ministry of Agriculture will be supporting schools with planned World Food Day celebrations.
The World Food Day 2020 National Planning Committee is being chaired by Mr. Leroy Jackson, Agricultural Assistant. Mr. Jackson is encouraging citizens of St Vincent and the Grenadines to grow local, buy local and eat local.
