SVGCC To Launch Waste Management Project

2 Min Read

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) will be launching the SVGCC Waste Management Project on Wednesday 26 April 2017.

The project would be done with funding from the Australian Direct Aid Program. With a student and staff population of over 2000, and tonnes of waste generated each day by the College, the institution recognises its role in the holistic development of the students and

The environmental impact its daily activities have on the surrounding community; hence the decision to preserve and protect its very fragile environs.

The project would be done in two phases.

Phase 1: This will include a Comprehensive Recycling Programme, the initial stages of this phase will focus on the reduction of waste material through the proper separation of waste which can lead to a more sustainable and cleaner environment. It will also place emphasis on effective policy drafting and implementation to effect change in stakeholders’ strategy and attitude toward waste management.

Phase 2, would see Composting and Backyard Gardens on Campus with its various campuses and extensive grounds, the College produces a plethora of organic materials such as grass cuttings and remains of food from its cafeterias. As such, a composting site at the Villa campus will greatly serve to reduce the amount of organic material which is disposed in the general garbage and ultimately ends up in the country’s landfills.

This project, however, is not an isolated one. As part of the South Coast Marine Area, the College in tandem with a social partner, the National Parks, is working toward the same goal – the protection and conservation of this area.
