3 Min Read

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee (SVGOC) in collaboration with Sport for Life Canada, Olympic Solidarity and the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) will host a workshop on Physical Literacy.

The workshop will be held at the Frenches House, Frenches, Kingstown on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th October, 2016 from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

In February 2016, as part of its long term development plan for sports, the SVGOC embarked on a two year Long Term Athletes Development (LTAD) pilot project aimed at creating a developmental pathway for sport in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Earlier this year, both Richard Way and Istvan Balyi of Sport for life Canada visited St. Vincent and the Grenadines in February and May respectively.

For the 3rd visit, Director of Physical Literacy of Sport for Life, Mr. Drew Mitchell will facilitate the physical literacy workshop. Mitchell who works as a consultant focused on the development of physical literacy and better sport at the community level has worked extensively in the sport system as an educator and developer of programmes for the past 19 years.

He has been involved in sport and fitness for over 40 years as an athlete, coach, administrator, volunteer, developer and manager.

The foundation of the LTAD model is physical literacy. Physical literacy can be described as the ability and motivation to capitalise on our movement potential to make a significant contribution to the quality of life.

All humans exhibit this potential, however its specific expression will be particular to the culture in which we live and the movement capacities with which we are endowed.

A physically literate individual moves with poise, economy and confidence in a wide variety of physically challenging situations. Individuals who are physically literate are more likely to have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to be physically active across a wide range of activities.

Developing physical literacy is therefore one of the cornerstones of being Active for Life and having better long- term health and performance outcomes.

The LTAD pilot project involves 6 countries within the Caribbean. St. Vincent and the Grenadines is one of six Caribbean nations selected by CANOC to benefit from the LTAD programme for two years from 2016 – 2018.

The other countries selected include Suriname, Haiti, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and the British Virgin Islands.
