A local Deacon of a Pentecostal church is appealing to parents to teach their children, especially their daughters, how to cook and do other house chores in preparation for when they leave the family home to go live with their spouse.
Winfield Cumberbatch, Head Deacon of the Glad Tidings Tabernacle at Gomea, made the appeal as he delivered his sermon on parenting during worship service on Sunday. He was at the time speaking to the issue of family members being isolated in the homes because of the advance in technology, hence the breaking away from tradition where young women were taught to do home chores in preparation for marriage life.
“Listen, you are preparing your children for when they leave your home. Soon they’re gonna leave your home, regardless to how much you love them, because they want their own independence. They don’t want parent to be behind them all the time. So, you are preparing them for when they leave home.
“It’s so sad, sometimes you have young people leaving home and they can’t do a thing. Some of the young ladies they can’t cook so they end up eating chickens all the time; they end up eating pizza.,” Deacon Cumberbatch said.
Referring to the Book of Titus 2: 4-5, he said Paul writing to young Titus gave instructions for the parents and the entire family.
“He said that the older women, the grandmother, parent that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children. Teach them to be discreet keepers of the home.
“So listen, parents teach your children, don’t take it for granted. Instruct them in the way they should go, when they get old they should never forget it. Don’t ever forget your God-given responsibility to look after them,” the Head Deacon told his congregation.
Deacon Cumberbatch further stated: “So you see, young couples, this thing is not only about marriage and love and affection and all of that. After you done make love, the man want something to eat. And ‘Sparrow’ (calypsonian ‘Mighty Sparrow’) say ‘you can’t make love on hungry belly.’
“So, the thing is; if you can’t cook, the man is not gonna – well, the country man; if he come from town, he might abide with it – but the country man ain’t gwine live on chicken and pizza all the time. You have to learn to cook. That is what Paul instructed Titus to do. Learn to cook, man.
