In a dramatic “deception operation” aimed at protecting the president from a credible Iranian assassination threat, Donald Trump was reportedly smuggled onto a secret military flight last month by hiding inside an airport catering container, according to recent reports from the Washington Post and New York Times.
The elaborate ruse took place in July 2026 while Trump was in Ankara for a Nato summit. While the White House publicly maintained that the president was traveling aboard the traditional Air Force One jumbo jet, he was actually being covertly transported to a smaller aircraft to ensure his safety amid escalating hostilities with Iran.
The operation began with a high-profile public display. Trump was seen by television cameras boarding the “old” Air Force One jet. However, minutes later, he was secretly moved to a smaller C-32A plane via an airport catering truck—the type typically used to load meals and supplies.
To maintain the illusion, the journalists in the traveling press pool were kept on the older Air Force One decoy. During the flight to Britain, the press were instructed to keep their window shades closed. When later questioned about the secrecy, Trump cryptically told reporters they were “probably on a dangerous flight,” adding, “But if I go, you go. Right?”.
Before the trip, Trump had attempted to explain the change in aircraft on Truth Social, claiming he would use the older, “baby blue” plane “for old time’s sake”. He stated the newer Boeing 747-8—a gift from Qatar—would stop at RAF Mildenhall so US service members could tour the aircraft.
In reality, the C-32A carrying the president arrived in Britain at approximately 10:20 p.m. local time, followed minutes later by the decoy Air Force One and the media. To complete the performance, Trump was brought from his actual transport back to the older Air Force One, where he emerged from the upper left-side door as he normally would for the waiting cameras.
The White House has defended the extreme security measures. Communications director Steve Cheung stated that the administration uses “every tool at our disposal” to address threats from “many enemies of America”.
This incident draws parallels to a similar operation in 2000, when Bill Clinton used an unmarked executive jet to enter Pakistan while using the official Air Force One as a decoy. The high-stakes maneuver in Turkey underscores the ongoing tension between the US and Iran, which shares a border with Turkey and has been a central focus of recent Trump administration foreign policy.
