- Two arrested after police remove 34 bodies from funeral home in Hull
Concerned about the treatment and storage of the deceased, police arrested two people and took 34 remains from a funeral parlour.
Three branches of Legacy independent funeral directors were investigated, leading to the detention of a 46-year-old male and a 23-year-old woman in Hull for questioning.
Preventing a proper and decent funeral, fraud by false representation, and fraud by abuse of power led to their imprisonment.
A local mortuary has received 34 remains from the undertakers, and over 350 individuals have contacted a helpline for concerned families, according to Humberside Police.
Legacy Funeral Directors’ behaviour prompted concerns last week.
Hull police visited three outlets of the firm on Anlaby Road and Hessle Road and one in Beverley on Wednesday.
A criminal probe led top officials to order the weekend removal of bodies from the locations.
Humberside Police Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin said: “We can confirm that a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of preventing a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation, and fraud by abuse of position and remain in police custody
As of today, 34 deceased people have been respectfully taken from Legacy funeral directors on Hessle Road to the Hull mortuary for formal identification as part of our investigation.
Legacy independent funeral directors’ three locations remain cordoned off since the report on Wednesday, March 6.
