For Colicia Stapleton, learning that she had been selected as one of five Vincentians to receive a full scholarship to the Saint James School of Medicine marked a moment that felt both surreal and deeply rewarding.

In an interview with the St Vincent Times, Stapleton shared that receiving the scholarship represented the realization of a goal she has held for as long as she can remember, validating years of academic hard work and dedication.

“Becoming a doctor has always been one of my lifelong dreams, so being given the opportunity to pursue that dream through this scholarship meant a lot,” Stapleton said. “It felt like the hard work and dedication I placed in my education over the years was paying off and it also motivated me to continue to strive for the best.”

Pursuing an education in medicine presents significant financial and academic demands. Stapleton explained that the full scholarship provides her with the freedom to concentrate entirely on her medical studies and clinical training without the constant worry of financial strain.

She emphasized that many students possess the ambition and capability required for medical school but lack the financial resources to enroll.

“By providing these scholarships, Saint James is giving a student like me an opportunity to receive a medical education that they may otherwise not been able to pursue,” she told the St Vincent Times.

Stapleton noted that this investment ultimately yields significant returns for the nation. As scholarship recipients complete their training, they bring their medical knowledge and skills back to serve in local healthcare across St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Looking ahead, Stapleton is committed to making a lasting impact on her home country’s medical system.

“I want to use my medical education to contribute to improving healthcare in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” she expressed. “I hope to use my education to serve patients in my community and the nation of SVG.”

In addition to caring for patients, Stapleton plans to actively mentor young Vincentians during her medical school journey, encouraging them to explore healthcare careers and pursue their own ambitions.

When discussing her specific medical interests, Stapleton highlighted a strong passion for radiology and diagnostic imaging.

“I find the role of diagnostic imaging in identifying and understanding diseases very interesting,” she noted. “This is needed since accurate diagnosis is a major step in helping to treat and cure diseases.”

Reflecting on her path to medical school, Stapleton offered words of advice and encouragement to other Vincentian students working toward their goals. She urged them to maintain self-belief and remain steadfast in the face of challenges.

“Medical school is a major commitment, and getting there requires hard work, discipline and consistency but once you set your mind to something it is possible,” Stapleton stated.

She also encouraged aspiring scholars to actively seek out scholarship opportunities, calling them essential stepping stones toward achieving long-term professional dreams.
