- World Paediatric Project Kicks Off 2024 Mission In SVG
The World Paediatric Project (WPP) began its year-long operations over the weekend by welcoming the general surgery team at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).
It is the first mission crew for 2024, and things are going well, according to a WPP statement.
The team performed a general surgery clinic at the hospital on Sunday, January 14, assessing 37 youngsters and scheduling 16 surgeries for January 15-18. Local and regional families from St. Lucia, Dominica, and Grenada made up the total number of patients visited on clinic day.
Dr. Jeffrey Lukish, a paediatric general surgeon, supervised this small but proficient team. The team also included Dr. Teodoro Reyes, a paediatric anesthesiologist; Dr. Eric Casella, a paediatric anesthesiologist fellow; and Sheree Dyer, an operating room (OR) nurse.
Dr. Jasmine Ellis-Davy, a local paediatric general surgeon, assisted the team, as did staff nurses and OR nurses from the MCMH.
“We’ve been able to provide some outstanding care with our Paediatric Anaesthesia and Nursing team,” Dr. Lukish is quoted saying.
He stated that procedures had been going well so far and that he planned to end the surgical week on a positive note.
“We are all happy to be here as part of the World Paediatric Project team supporting the healthcare needs of the children of this area.”
Dr. Jasmine Ellis-Davy, who works closely with Dr. Lukish, had the same thoughts, noting, “This mission has been going well.”
Among the scheduled surgeries were two Nuss procedures for patients with Pectus excavatum, a sternum/ribcage deformity, as well as a few other minor instances. (Dr. Donald Nuss invented the method in 1987).
Dr. Ellis-Davy thanked the mission’s sponsors as well as everyone who helps make the missions possible.
WPP also expressed gratitude to the Mustique Charitable Foundation and Trinity School of Medicine for their sponsorship of this expedition and ongoing support in improving the lives of Caribbean children.
The mission leaves the state over the weekend after completing procedures on Thursday.
