The future of local farming is taking center stage as the ROOTS Youth in Agriculture Programme continues its mission to inspire the next generation of agricultural professionals. Facilitated by the Rural Transformation Unit, the initiative is designed to provide young participants with a comprehensive look at modern farming, blending traditional practices with cutting-edge technology.
The programme kicked off its recent activities on Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, with a focus on value-added processing. Utilizing the Food Science Laboratories at both the Girls’ High School (GHS) and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Technical College (SVGTC), campers engaged in practical sessions involving fish and meat processing. These activities aimed to show participants how raw products can be transformed into higher-value goods, a key component of agricultural entrepreneurship.
On Monday, July 27, the focus shifted to animal husbandry during a field visit to the Livestock Breeding Centre at Orange Hill. Participants observed advanced animal production techniques firsthand, with a specific emphasis on artificial insemination and modern breeding practices. This exposure highlights the scientific advancements currently driving the livestock sector.
The integration of technology remained a core theme on Tuesday, July 28, as the group explored the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture. In addition to discussing digital innovations, participants took part in a hands-on hydroponics construction activity. This session provided practical experience with sustainable production methods that are essential for the future of farming in limited-space environments.
The Rural Transformation Unit’s primary goal through this programme is to equip youth with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills. By offering exposure to innovation and modern farming technology, the Ministry continues its efforts to encourage greater youth involvement in the agricultural sector, ensuring it remains a vital and evolving part of the national economy.
