Methodist Minister Rev Adolf Davis Says He Does Not Trust Politicians
Superintendent of the Kingstown/Chateaubelair Circuit of the Methodist Church Rev Adolf Davis says; “Sometimes, people will do wrong in their name, but if they think it’s politically advantageous, they won’t say anything.”
Davis made the remarks as he delivered the sermon at a worship service on Sunday 16th May, in reference to Psalm 1:1, which says, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”
“God is saying that the chief counselors must not be ungodly, but so much of St Vincent walks in the counsel of the politicians.”
“So, there is a general sense in which we are all blessed because of God’s goodness to us. But there is a sense in which, if we’re using the Psalm as a basis, you have to ask yourself: ‘Are we corrupting our blessings?’ Because there is a current advantage but not lasting benefit,” Rev Davis said.
The Methodist Minister said that years ago, he got some advice that helped him.
“So, as a general rule, I don’t trust politicians – as a general rule, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying all politicians are ungodly – as a general rule. And I’ll tell you why I use this as an example,” he said.
He spoke of a former politician in Guyana who was a preacher and who told him: Rev, always be mindful. You and the politician may say the same thing and may do the same thing but for entirely different reasons.”
Rev Davis said that recently, he talked with a friend who expressed his view about the management of emergency shelters and how he would have approached it. He said what the friend proposed made sense, and he asked his friend, “which politician will do that?”
“And my point was because very often politicians are not going to make decisions that may be right decisions but maybe political suicide.”
“And don’t fool yourself. This is no NDP politician and no ULP politician, or what BLP or DLP. It’s politicians in general. So often the choices they make or counsel they give you and the decisions they make are based a lot of times on what is politically expedient”.
“So, that is why some of them when they know something to be right they might remain silent. And even when they know something to be wrong they will remain silent”.
