A number of projects will commence in Bequia this year while other will be completed. The Bequia Community High School, multi-million dollar rehabilitation is 80 percent complete.
Minister of Finance Camilo Gonsalves says the Government will also build on its initiative to mainstream educational opportunities for children with learning challenges at Bequia’s Sunshine School – an emerging regional best practice.
In Health Care
The Paget Farm Health Centre and the Bequia Hospital will enjoy rehabilitation and expansion this year as $1.3 million has been allocated in Budget 2024.
Additionally the “Improvement to Primary Health Care” project will provide instruments, equipment, furniture and fittings for health facilities in Bequia.
In Roads
In addition to ongoing BRAGSA repair work in the Grenadines, the Bluff Road realignment will continue, and the National Road Rehabilitation Project will begin the $1.6 million repair of the Canouan Coast Guard Road. A contract for that work has already been signed.
Similarly, over $440,000 is allocated to establish a Police substation in Mayreau, and to upgrade markets, revenue and District Council offices in the Grenadines.
Gonsalves said the government policy to reduce climate-related vulnerabilities in Bequia will continue with the ramping up of solar energy generation in the Grenadines.
Impediments to the commencement of the desalination plant in Bequia have been resolved, and the resilience-building project would get underway in 2024 with an allocation of $1.4 million to the project.
Gonsalves said the government’s plan to simultaneously begin a solar PV plant in Bequia will be delayed further as we review designs, resolve issues related to optimal land use, and consult with community stakeholders.
