- FAO IUU Mission to Assist in revision of SVG Fisheries Act
St Vincent’s Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has announced the launch of the 6th mission in support of legislative amendments to law concerning the fisheries sector in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The FAO mission aims to finalize the Draft of the new SVG Fisheries Act, facilitate early planning for the implementation of future regulations and to support stakeholders in effectively implementing the new legislation once adopted. The mission will provide invaluable expertise and guidance to ensure that the fisheries sector in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is well-positioned for sustainable and responsible growth.
The mission is expected to come to an end on the 2nd February 2024.
Through this mission, the Ministry of Agriculture, etc reaffirms its commitment to support the frameworks for the management and development of the fisheries sectors.
The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon Saboto Caesar, his 2024 Budget presensation outlined that the revision of the Fisheries Act will be a critical deliverable in the Ministry’s quest to enhance the islands blue economy competitiveness. The Minister is confident that the support of the FAO will assist the country in satisfying the legislative prerequisites for entry of marine products into the EU.
Dr Coleen Phillips, on behalf of Dr Renata Clarke of the FAO Sub Regional office for the Caribbean, said that ‘The FAO looks forward to working closely with the government and stakeholders in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to ensure the successful finalization and implementation of the SVG Fisheries Act. The organization remains dedicated to promoting responsible and sustainable practices in the fisheries sector and advances the development of policies that benefit both the environment and local communities. The organization recognizes the importance of collaboration and cooperation in achieving sustainable and inclusive growth in the fisheries industry’.
