The St Lucia government has paid compensation to former LIAT (1974) Limited employees. Labour Minister Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte advised them to use the rewards responsibly.
“Don’t blow it up in a day; employ women’s economics. She stated women manage money well.
The Prime Minister’s Office reported former LIAT employees and Majestic Industries’ compensation package exceeded EC$6.3 million (1 EC dollar = US$0.37 cents).
Former LIAT employees received government bond certificates last weekend, which are cash redeemable and can be used as loan collateral.
The minister thanked former LIAT workers for their patience.
LIAT (1974) has gone into liquidation after more than four decades in the region. Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre claimed his administration has reached a deal with non-management LIAT personnel who were laid off.
Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines own the airline (SVG). Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne stated Barbados and SVG might sell their LIAT interests to St. John’s for one EC dollar.
Albert-Poyotte said former Majestic Industry workers who have waited 18 years for recompense will also obtain terminal benefits.
“In these tough times, the PM would tell you it wasn’t easy. The administration had no choice because of the workers’ condition, she said.
