- GDF denies Venezuelans removed Guyanese flag from western border
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has denied a video circulating on social media in which a group of Venezuelans appears to be removing a Guyanese flag from the two nations’ disputed border.
According to a statement issued by the GDF, “The video in question is not from Guyana, and we categorically state that the flag being lowered is not the recently hoisted GOLDEN ARROWHEAD along our border.”
“The accompanying images show distinct differences between the two locations. Notably, the freshly put plaque at the real site is not visible in the film.”
It further stated: “The public must understand that the video’s content is misleading and does not represent any activity or incident within Guyana.”
The GDF’s statement comes after Venezuelans voted in favour of the government’s claim to sovereignty over western Guyana, which is rich in oil and minerals, in a referendum on Sunday.
According to an Associated Press (AP) report, the National Electoral Council claimed to have counted more than 10.5 million votes.
According to the Associated Press, the National Electoral Council did not specify if the number of votes was equal to each voter or the aggregate of each individual answer.
