- Cruise Tragedy: German Passenger Dies During Bike Ride on St Vincent (SVG)
A German man died on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent while biking with his brother just outside the capital, Kingstown, on Friday afternoon.
Mattias Thormaehlen, who was a passenger aboard the AIDA Perla, was pronounced dead at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, the island’s main health facility, after being rushed there under police escort.
Mattias and his brother Oliver were both riding bikes up Casson Hill when Mattias complained of chest pains. Oliver was the one who stopped the vehicle of Ariel Gibson, and, as fate would have it, Gibson is a medical doctor.
Before being taken to the hospital, the man was given CPR on location at Casson Hill.
Acting Prime Minister Saboto Caesar told the St. Vincent Times on Friday afternoon that Dr. Ariel Gibson went beyond the call of duty.
“She was driving to Kingstown and saw the situation and stopped to assist all the way to the emergency room. “I want to recognise her hard work and professionalism in attempting to save the life of the visitor.”
Caesar told the St. Vincent Times that a medical student from St. James University who is a member of the Red Cross tried her best to administer CPR, while taxi operator Imnah Thomas was instrumental in transporting the tourist to the hospital under police escort.
The acting prime minister and ship officials held an emergency meeting aboard the ship earlier this evening.
