The St Vincent Girls High School is helping to cultivate a passion of agriculture among its students.
Students were able to plant crops such as watermelon, cucumber, corn and tomatoes, as well as learn about unique planting techniques including mulching and water conservation with a drip irrigation system.
According to Dermaine Owens, the API Geography and Social Sciences teacher at the Girls High School, the kids worked hard, and he believes they will be the future generation of farmers capable of using current technology.
The girls’ high school students just received first place in the secondary school category, as well as the Best Use of Technology trophy, in the National School Gardening Competition 2023.
Owens praised the 53 kids in the environment club, as well as the professors who helped the group with its efforts.
The geography teacher stated that, despite problems such as threats from animals and praedial larceny, he plans to extend the club’s activities to allow pupils to study more.
