Cayman Islands to get second woman governor
When current governor Martyn Roper leaves office in April of next year, career diplomat Jane Owen, 59, has been chosen to take over as the next governor of the Cayman Islands.
The second woman to be named governor is Owen.
She will be leaving her current position as the non-resident ambassador to the neighbouring Principality of Liechtenstein and the British ambassador to Switzerland.
As the desk officer for the Central America Department, Owen started her career in the civil service with the British Foreign Office in 1987.
Since that time, she has worked for the departments of commerce in London as well as Japan, Vietnam, India, and Switzerland.
Owen expressed her happiness about the appointment in a statement sent by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
She stated, “I look forward to forging a strong collaboration with the elected government and I will do everything in my power to serve the people of all three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman.
She might also be the first governor of Cayman to serve the entirety of her term away from Seven Mile Beach.
Given the lack of access elsewhere along the well-known stretch, tourism minister Kenneth Bryan has stated that the government is considering moving the governor’s mansion, Government House, and taking it over to create a larger attraction at Governor’s Beach for locals and tourists.
