- Nobody in the ULP will burn their own billboards
The leader of the Unity Labour Party, Ralph Gonsalves, says every billboard that the ULP has put up has been put up with the permission of the planning authorities. “It’s in accordance with the planning authorities; that’s fact number one,” Gonsalves said on Sunday on the Issue at Hand programme.
Gonsalves was speaking about the burning of his party’s billboard, which is located just opposite the CW Prescod Primary School in Kingstown.
Gonsalves said fact number two is that the billboards at the entrance of the city are not on public property but on private property, and thirdly, there is no law or sensibility connected to civilization or civilised life and living to say you can’t have billboards up after elections.
“What happens is that the representation of the People’s Act says that on Election Day, you must not display billboards, images, and the like.” We ensure that any billboards near a polling station receive adequate coverage on Election Day. that polling station, which is opposite where those billboards are on election morning, they are covered.”
”I wanted to state other facts. Well, you’re quite correct in saying that there is no evidence that anyone connected with the New Democratic Party burned the billboards. You can’t say that they hired somebody to do it or that anybody supporting them did it on their own accord or with the approval of the New Democratic Party. Certainly, nobody in the ULP will burn their own billboards, and nobody who supports the ULP will burn their own billboards. I’m not saying that anybody who is supporting the NDP did the burning, but I’m stating what we can reasonably present as facts and evidence.”
Gonsalves said this second burning occurred in the early morning after the rally last Sunday, so there may well be some coincidence or there may be none, so reasonable people can draw their own conclusions.
