Parliament was suspended for a short period on Thursday following a request by MP St Clair Leacock for what he told the speaker was a matter of public concern.
The private consultation involved the Speaker, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, and MP Leacock.
On resumption of the house, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said during the consultation, Leacock produced a video that was purportedly sent to him purportedly showing paramilitary SSU persons with particular devices in their hands and (wining) as if they were in a Michael Jackson video.
“I call the commissioner in his presence, I accepted that the MP was led to believe that was here, I accepted what he was saying, and as I told the honorable leader of the Opposition, I can’t discuss what the Commissioner level of assessment was, of what we saw on the video.”
“I called the Commissioner and told him it was unprofessional for persons who should be protecting the public and peaceful protesters to be wining like it’s a disco, but a senior member of my security team said, is this the video, and he said, no this is not St Vincent, this is not outside, these uniforms are for Trinidadians and this happened in Trinidad.”
“So I called the Commissioner back, and the member of Central Kingstown, who had left the room, told him, and he checked, and it was confirmed that this video was not of St Vincent but Trinidad, so all is well that ends well.”
Gonsalves said he was grateful to the MP for raising it.
“Clearly, he was misled, I am absolutely sure had he known it was Trinidad, he would not; have raised the matter.”
