The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, through the Venezuelan Institute of Culture and Cooperation “Hugo Chávez Frías”, the Solidarity Group and the National Council of Women in SVG carried out the activity “Poetic song to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.”
This cultural activity between the peoples of Venezuela and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines took place within the framework of the commemoration of International Women’s Day, the World Day of Poetry and the Day of the Abolition of slavery in Venezuela, historic references for the consolidation of the unity of the peoples and expressions of solidarity from the Caribbean.
Francisco Pérez Santana, head of the Venezuelan mission in SVG explained to those present that the objective of this event was to pay tribute to two women who transcended in their struggle for the rights of women and our peoples: Granny Rose (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) and Algeria Laya (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela). Likewise, Pérez emphasized the current situation facing the Venezuelan people as they are victims of a ferocious electrical sabotage orchestrated by the US empire.
“Here we are, fighting and doing what we must do to resist. The Venezuelan people thank all of you for accompanying us with your song, with your poetry and most importantly with your patriotic love “, emphasized Pérez.
Kafi Rose, granddaughter of the honoree, reflected on the life of the Vincentian leader Germaine Rose, better known as “Granny Rose; who was involved in the teaching of children for more than 50 years, serving as an active member of the Committee of Preschool Services, now known as the National Association of Early Childhood Education (NAECE), where she worked in Early Childhood Education and created the planning of activities for children.
Andreína Bermúdez, coordinator of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation “Hugo Chávez Frías, spoke about the life and work of Algeria Laya, who is considered one of the pioneers of the feminist movement in Venezuela.
She was a teacher, political and social activist, she defended the right of women to education by participating in the “Educating for equality” program through which an educational system was implemented that eliminated sexism in the educational process. Bermúdez presented to the public the video “Commander Jacinta” that served as a short biography about the struggle of this Venezuelan leader.
Several voices united in different ways to pay tribute to these heroines of the Caribbean and at the same time express their solidarity with the people of Bolívar and Chávez.
In this regard, Jomo Thomas, Speaker of the House of Assembly of SVG, dedicated his poetry to the unity of our peoples and invited us to follow the dream of the Bolivarian Revolution.
For her part, H.E Vilma Valdespino, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in SVG delighted the audience with three poems inspired by women, in English, Spanish and Russian; Vincentian poet, Nerissa King read beautiful verses dedicated to the struggle of the woman for a better world; Maxine Browne, director of the dance group “La Gracia” recited beautiful poems; Vincentian poet Cecil Blazer Williams inspired the audience by reading his poems with creative passion; Cuban poet, Dr. Neuricel Fonseca dedicated her lyrics to the care of humanity; the Honorary Consul in Belize, Zoila Browne reaffirmed with her verses the solidarity that the Vincentian people have with the Venezuelan people and with President Nicolás Maduro Moros.
Music was also part of this night of tributes: Dexter Rose and Zahily Sariol Valera performed several Cuban, Vincentian and Venezuelan musical pieces, among which was the famous song “Venezuela” and “Alma Llanera”; Vincentian musician Oswald William was in charge of starting the activity with his saxophone and to the rhythm of “Guantanamera” the Cuban singer Arianna Taylor had the audience dancing, the evening culminated with the “Resistant Heartbeat Drummers”.
The community of artists, poets and Vincentian musician thanked the Venezuelan Embassy for making this type of meeting to promote the battle of ideas from an environment of literary and musical creation, amidst the imperialist aggressions that the people and the government of Venezuela are facing.
