The NDP government has kept Higher Education even after lambasting the former ULP administration for implementing it.
Following its implementation in 2022, high-ranking members and talk show hosts for the NDP party stated that the former prime minister Ralph Gonsalves was at the time emasculating former Education Minister Curtis King.
In a Facebook post former Education Minister Curtis King said,
“After all the NDP’s noise about the separation of higher education from the regular Ministry of Education, they have maintained the separation! Oh, and instead of two ministers of education, we now have three.”
Kings post was met with several different reactions, including
“Can you believe it? I was saying the same thing. When the Honourable Dr Ralph Gonsalves took away some of your responsibilities from your portfolio as Minister of Education, John Public ran off at the mouth on you, saying you couldn’t handle the post. Here we are today.”
“Would it be a good thing for the country?”
“You have lost your pension and the people’s trust. Go find something meaningful to do with your life; you will be remembered as the WORST minister of education in SVG.”
In 2022, Gonsalves announced that he was taking over ministerial responsibility for tertiary education from King.
Gonsalves in 2022 said his passion for education is unquestionable and that aspect of the education system was a priority for his government.
The portfolio is now under the command of Minister of Education Phillip Jackson along with Minister of State in the Ministry of Lavern King.
