KDI School, a global institution, has welcomed the first-ever student from St. Vincent and the Grenadines
Tonya Saflana John chose KDI School due to its dynamic programs and rich cultural diversity. She chose to pursue her degree in sustainable regional development at KDI School, as South Korea is one of the most successful countries in achieving rapid economic growth. Tonya’s first impressions of the school and its community were positive, as she was the only student from her country.
Upon arrival, Tonya felt anxious due to being far away from family and friends. However, she quickly settled in and was greeted by the welcoming and helpful staff. The campus tour was also helpful, with dorm assistants, staff, and continuing students providing assistance in finding nearby stores, navigating apps, and getting bus routes.
Tonya is excited about taking the Korean Economic Development course and Korean Language and Culture, as she wants to learn about the history, challenges, methods, and strategies faced in the country. She is excited to try out Korean skin care products and join the gym.
Despite facing language barriers, Tonya has managed them by using apps like Papago, Naver Maps, and Google Translate to make commuting and translating Korean to English easier. For those considering studying at KDI School, Tonya encourages Vincentians back home to take advantage of the yearly educational opportunities offered and explore the different programs offered at KDI School. There are many scholarship opportunities available, and traveling across the world to learn about global issues is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
KDI School is NASPAA accredited, and Tonya hopes to explore other Asian countries during her stay in South Korea before returning to her home country.
