A fine of $800.00 was on Tuesday December 18th imposed upon 29 years old Uranos Cabral of Glen after he was convicted by District Magistrate Pompey on 3 separate charges of using threatening language and common assault upon two Law Enforcement Officers at the Calliaqua Police Station on September 12th, 2018.
Cabral was ordered to pay the fine forthwith or face a 3 month jail term at Her Majesty’s Prison in capital Kingstown.
The Court heard that on the date in question Cabral was taken into Police custody via a bench warrant that was issued by District Magistrate Zola Ellis-Browne after he failed to appear in Court to answer charges.
Reports indicate that whilst at the Station at Calliaqua Cabral inform one of the Corporal who was on duty that he requested to use the washroom after which he was taken to the Station Office where he consumed a soda water which he requested because he said he was not feeling well.
Cabral is said to run out of the station but was re-captured by the Police and placed in a cell during which time the threatening were made stating that he would kill two of the Police Officers and proceeded further to spit on them which resulted in the charges.
In his defense Cabral denied threatening and spitting on the Officer. He however stated that he ran from the Station because he was severely beaten by the Officers.
As a result, Magistrate Bertie Pompey dismissed the charge of escaping lawful custody citing that the police did not produce a copy of the bench warrant as evidence in Courts during the trial.
