Court tells customs officer to repay money or serve prison time

Gibron Bailey, a St. Vincent Customs officer who was charged with theft of over $140 thousand Eastern Caribbean dollars, was given a suspended sentence for one year when he appeared in court on Wednesday, October 25.

The court mandated that Bailey repay the entire amount of $68,110.87 within six months or face a six-month prison sentence. $75,182.08 in cheques were handed over to the court on Wednesday.

An investigation carried out by the Major Crimes Unit of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Police Force said Bailey was found to have stolen sixty-eight thousand, one hundred and ten dollars and eighty-seven cents ($68,110.87ECC) in cash and cheques to the value of seventy-five thousand, one hundred and eighty-two dollars and eight cents ($75,182.08ECC), the property of the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The 39-year-old Customs Officer of Diamond was charged with ten counts of theft.
