SVG Marks 46 Years of Independence from Britain

Today, Monday, October 27, 2025, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is commemorating 46 years of hard-won independence and national pride.

The small Caribbean nation, nestled in the heart of the Windward Islands, broke free from British colonial rule on October 27, 1979, becoming the last of the Windward Islands to achieve independence.

What began as a distant British territory has transformed into a vibrant, self-determined nation with a rich cultural heritage and unwavering national spirit.

This year’s celebration takes on special significance, reflecting on nearly five decades of progress, challenges overcome, and the continued growth of a proud nation.

In a special Independence Day address, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves is expected to emphasize national unity and continued progress.
